The Sheroes Hangout café in Agra

In the three years since the launch of the project, three more cafés have opened across India, providing nearly 30 survivors with employment opportunities. ‘We aim to provide jobs to more than 100 survivors by 2020 through this initiative,’ says Laxmi. SAA also plans to expand to other projects like hair and beauty salons.

Ours is a nation that says it loves its girls – you don’t have to look further than the many government schemes started in the name of the girl child – but our actions often speak otherwise. But between the Nirbhaya protests and the campaigns led by Laxmi and other brave survivors, social media has helped in getting the stories of gender violence out there, and making people aware of the inequalities women still suffer in our society. It has even forced the authorities to sit up and take notice. Can social media take all the credit? Certainly not, but without the medium, it’s impossible to imagine Laxmi’s story reaching millions across the world, and thousands marching to India Gate while braving water cannons to protest the grievous violence done to Nirbhaya.

This is social media at its best; this is us at our best.
